Bed guards (or rails) are designed to stop a young child, usually aged around 2 yrs old, from falling out of bed. When a young child moves from a cot, with sides, to a bed without sides they are prone to rolling out and so it sensible to invest in a side rail to prevent this.

• The type of bed base you have eg solid base or slatted. Some guards that attach on the side of the bed will not attach to a slatted base.

• Do you need a specific colour or finish? Guards are available in a range of colours eg blue, pink, white and finishes eg wood, mesh or foam.

• Is your child very active at night time? If so you may want to consider a guard that stretches the length of the bed (and even along the bottom too).

In reality very few children bang their heads on guards but if you are concerned then don't choose a wooden one. The subject of entrapment is key and all bed guards should carry a statement to show they have been tested and passed the UK Safety Standard for Bed Guards. Passing of this standard ensures that entrapment cannot occur.

• The prices of bed guards vary considerably from around £10 for a foam guard to £50 for a wooden one. If you need one on either side or have more than one child then cost must be a major consideration.

When Should You Move Your Child From a Crib to a Bed?

There are no hard and fast rules on when exactly you should move your child from the crib to a bed although most make the transition between the ages of 18 to 36 months. Different children react to this transition differently with some freely giving up their crib while others stubbornly refusing to move no matter what you do.

Parents too have differing views on this issue. Some feel an early transition is good as it fosters confidence and independence. On the other hand, others do not like to rush and prefer to make the transition at the last possible moment when they feel that their child is truly ready for the move. One other common reason parents move their child to a bed is because they need to free up the crib for the new baby. However, to force your child out of the crib to accommodate a new baby will only cause resentment in the process. If you really need to get your toddler out of the crib for the new baby, try to do so weeks before your baby is due. This way, your toddler is less likely to feel that he or she has to give up the crib for the new baby. Otherwise, you may be better off getting another crib, especially if you know your toddler just isn't ready for a bed.

In conclusion, while there is no necessity to rush your child to a bed, there is also little reason to delay the transition when the need arises. A way to help your toddler along with the move is to ease him or her into the idea before it becomes absolutely necessary to make the transition for obvious safety reasons. By doing so, your child would be less likely to reject the new bed as the move does not seem sudden and forced.

Convertible Versus Drop-Side Cribs

A big choice that new parents must often make is the type of crib to get for the nursery - a traditional drop-side crib, or the more recently introduced cribs that can be converted into toddler beds and full-sized beds. Although personal preferences are very important here, my vote goes to convertible cribs for reasons of value and practicality as well as for decorative reasons.

Drop-side cribs have traditionally been preferred because of the perception that being able to lower the crib rail is essential for comfortably getting your baby in and out of the crib. However, countless women that I have discussed this with suggest that it is a feature used far less frequently than thought. Despite great efforts on the part of manufacturers to make the drop-side mechanisms safe, durable, quiet, and easy- to-use, most Moms seem to quickly discover that it becomes more trouble than it's worth: it's too hard to manage while holding the baby; it makes too much noise; it gets caught up in the bedding. I would guess that in the vast majority of cases, the drop-side is not used following the first couple of weeks. The drop-side feature substantially limits the decorative design options; accepting these limits seems silly if the feature is not much used.

Once you get past the perceived benefits of drop-side cribs, convertible cribs win hands-down. Their mattresses can be easily moved up and down to adjust to your growing baby, giving the same benefits of a drop-side crib. When your child is ready to get trained for a real bed, the crib easily converts to a toddler bed with a safety rail. And finally, the two longer side pieces of the crib become the headboard and footboard of a full-sized bed. The elimination of the drop-side provides designers with much more flexibility which I have found results in substantially more decorative pieces. All of this for a price which is normally only mildly more than a drop-side crib.
